It’s the time of year when preparations are being made for children and older students to return to school; and the general public and healthcare workers are gearing up for the upcoming flu season – also known as National Immunization Awareness Month.

The viruses and bacteria that cause vaccine-preventable diseases and death still exist and can infect those not protected by vaccines. Vaccines have reduced and in many cases, eliminated diseases that once killed or disabled thousands of infants, children and adults in the recent past.

Children need a series of shots from birth to age six. Pre-teens need recommended shots by age 12. There are also immunizations that adults need for maximum health. Talk to your provider to be sure of the immunizations that you and your family need. Remember, vaccines help prevent many serious diseases and improve the health and well-being of our community.

For more information on the recommended schedule per age group, check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for tips and recommendations: www.cdc.gov.
