The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Child Protective Services at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County offers an ACGME-accredited 3-year Child Abuse Pediatric Fellowship Program.
The fellowship program was developed in 2002 and is designed to train superb clinicians by providing comprehensive clinical and academic training in all areas of Child Abuse Pediatrics in preparation for sub-specialty board certification and independent practice.
The Division of Child Protective Services is a well-established, multi-disciplinary evaluation and treatment team that has been in place for over 25 years, with four board certified child abuse pediatrics faculty providing comprehensive medical evaluations and follow-up care to approximately 1,500 children each year at the hospital and at the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center (CCAC). The faculty staffs the hospital’s satellite medical clinic housed at the CCAC, which is a referral site for child sexual abuse cases in the city of Chicago.
In addition to the hospital-based consult service and CCAC clinic, participation in a weekly follow–up clinic allows the fellow to master the long-term management of child maltreatment and sequelae, as well as identify available resources while advocating for patients in the community setting. The fellow will have ample opportunity to participate in the medical evaluations of acute and chronic child abuse and neglect while benefiting from the experience of the legal, mental health, law-enforcement and child welfare professionals. The large and varied clinical volume, multi-disciplinary model of practice, strong mentoring and assignment of progressive responsibility all provide for an optimal fellowship learning experience.
In addition to patient care, the fellow will learn to provide effective court testimony, will provide education on child maltreatment related topics to both medical and non-medical audiences and will learn to advocate for improved policy in the care of maltreated children. Participation in scholarly activity and quality improvement projects is required and supported with mentorship and protected research time. An optional Master of Science in Clinical Research or coursework towards an MPH is available.
Application
The Child Abuse Pediatric Fellowship Program participates in the ERAS universal application process and in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applicants should be board eligible/certified in General Pediatrics.
