Fireworks are extremely dangerous. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that 65% of fireworks injuries are caused in the 30 days surrounding the July 4th holiday.

In 2013, there were 8 deaths and an estimated 11,400 injuries throughout the United States. 116 of those injuries were reported in Illinois. Also, in Illinois, about half of those injured were children, with burns as the most common type of injury (64%); injuries affecting hands, fingers, and eyes were the most frequent.

Fireworks can have a life-altering impact, including severe eye injuries, loss of limbs, and even death. Adding to personal injury, fireworks are often the cause of home and vehicle fires.

In Illinois, it is illegal to possess, offer for sale, expose for sale, sell at retail or use or explode consumer fireworks. ‘Novelty items’ such as snappers and party poppers, and sparklers are exempt from the law, however, municipalities may prohibit the sale and use of sparklers on public property within their jurisdiction.

It’s important to discourage your friends and family members from using fireworks. Leave them to the experts, and enjoy one of the many professional displays taking place in our communities.
