Preventing eye injuries is vital! Good eye protection is a must, especially during the summer season. Everyone, including children, is at risk for eye damage from UV radiation that can lead to loss of vision. People who have prolonged exposure to the sun working or playing outside are at the greatest risk.

In addition, the  risk of sun exposure-related problems is highest for people who:

  • Have had cataract surgery.
  • Take medications such as tetracycline, sulfa drugs, birth control pills, diuretics and tranquilizers that increase the eye’s sensitivity to light.

Whenever you work or play outside, wear a brimmed cap and eyewear that blocks UV rays. For some outdoor activities (racquet/ball sports, skiing, working with power tools, chemicals, etc.), you will also need eyewear that provides impact protection.
