Cook County Health offers more than 30 accredited residency and fellowship programs, continuing a proud 150-year tradition of training doctors to care for the medically underserved.
In 1866, Cook County Health launched the first medical internship in the U.S. and the program quickly developed a reputation for providing tremendous experience treating patients with a wide range of diseases.
Today, residents and fellows at the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County continue to receive advanced training at a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings with a diverse patient population.

Advanced Practice Provider Student Rotations

Cook County Health currently offers clinical rotations to qualified Advanced Practice Provider students – Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants – based on current affiliation agreements with educational institutions.
Clinical rotations are scheduled by the affiliated school’s program coordinators only. Affiliated school’s program coordinators should contact clinical providers directly to set up rotations. All rotations are based on Cook County Health clinical providers availability, which can be accessed through a link sent to program coordinators directly. To find out more, click on the link below:
Observerships and Shadowing
While Cook County Health is happy to provide training to those pursuing degrees in the medical field, or those in post graduate training, we cannot provide “shadowing” or “observership” experiences. Our patients and their medical care is our number one priority, and it is for this reason that we cannot make exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your understanding.
In order to participate in rotations at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, you must be familiar with some very important issues that may differ slightly from your home institution. The link below will bring you to educational modules on Infection Control, Handwashing and a brief orientation to the hospital that includes topics such as Patient Identifiers, Fire Safety and Pain Control for Patients. Completion of these modules is required prior to beginning a rotation at Stroger.
