Letter From Department Chair

The Department of Pediatrics at Cook County Health promotes family centered care to children of all ages from infancy to young adulthood.  Our mission is to establish universal access to the world’s best care and health services for all Cook County residents regardless of the ability to pay, so all may live their healthiest lives.  We seek to create partnerships with other health providers and communities to enhance the health of the public. We also advocate for policies that promote the physical, mental, and social well-being of the people of Cook County.

We bring together a breadth of primary and pediatric subspecialty services throughout our wide network of hospital and community systems.  We provide well childcare visits, immunizations, screenings, emergency care, and specialized services based on the need of the child.  We also offer valuable opportunities to train the next generation of leaders in Pediatric Medicine to care for children in the communities and globally.

Together, we are committed to providing high quality patient care, innovative educational opportunities, and clinical research to improve the lives of children worldwide.

Servicios Comunes

The Department of Pediatrics offers an expansive and robust pediatric subspecialty service to infants, children, and adolescents throughout Chicago and Cook County to provide optimal care and management. We have convenient locations and a team of experts ready to care for your children. Most appointments are provided within 1-2 weeks by calling 312-864-KIDS.

Our Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine team provides comprehensive primary, consultative and specialty care for teens and young adults aged 12 to 25. We are a partner of Title X services to prevent teen pregnancies and foster educational success.  We are a training site for Adolescent Medicine fellowship.

  • Adolescent and Young Adult Clinic (AYAC) – John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County
  • Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center – a clinic for the prevention, care, and research of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases providing comprehensive HIV care for 15–24-year-olds in Chicago.
  • Arlington Heights Health Center, Belmont-Cragin Health Center, Blue Island Health Center, Englewood Health Center, Bronzeville Health Center, Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, Morton East Adolescent Health Center, and North Riverside Health Center

Our Allergy/Immunology physicians provide evaluation and management of pediatric and adult patients with allergic diseases, immunodeficiency, and rheumatologic diseases. We provide inpatient and outpatient consults and referrals for patients with asthma, hives, food allergies, medication reactions, environmental allergies, atopic dermatitis, primary and secondary immunodeficiencies. We offer allergy blood and skin testing, pulmonary function testing, immune function testing, and oral food testing. We are a training site for Allergy/Immunology fellowship.

  • John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Arlington Heights Health Center, Blue Island Health Center, and Bronzeville Health Center.

Our Pediatric Behavior & Development specialist provides consultations and evaluations for children with conditions associated with developmental delay and/or behavior concerns.  We work in close collaboration with other medical specialties.

Our Pediatric Cardiology subspecialty service provides treatment and management of complex cardiac conditions including congenital or acquired heart defects, arrhythmias, suspected genetic abnormality, and multifetal gestations. We have a dedicated team comprised of Pediatric Cardiologists and a skilled Echo Technician providing 24/7 coverage.

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology earned Accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in Echocardiography.  Stroger Hospital is a nationally renowned Trauma Center, working closely with Gift of Hope in the evaluation of Donor Hearts.

Our Child Abuse Team provides multidisciplinary consultation, assessment, treatment and referral services for children and adolescents suspected of abuse and neglect.  We have a dedicated team comprised of Attending Physician and Social Worker who identifies, evaluates, advocates, and treats children and families suspected of child abuse and neglect.  We work in collaboration with the medical care team, health care providers and social/law enforcement agencies.  We work to ensure the health and safety of every child and family.

Pediatric Endocrinology specializes in the treatment and management of various types of disorders of the endocrine system. We provide treatment and management for diabetes, thyroid diseases, growth disorder, puberty problems, and metabolic bone diseases.  Our team of Endocrinologists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Dietitians, Certified Diabetic Educators and Psychologists utilizes a multidisciplinary approach in providing the best evaluation and treatment for children and their families.

We have a comprehensive DM clinic with the latest technology including pumps and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).  We also have an Obesity Clinic on Stroger campus treating various complications including Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), EMO and Dyslipidemia. We offer stimulation testing.  We also offer the FIT Program supporting youth with chronic illnesses and their families.

Gastroenterology specializes in complex gastroenterological conditions involving the organs in the digestive system: esophagus, stomach, intestine, liver, and pancreas.  We provide care for newborn, infants, children, and adolescents with gastrointestinal conditions including esophagitis, inflammatory bowel diseases, intestinal conditions, gastroesophageal reflux, liver disease, and disorders of the pancreas.

We work in close collaboration with other pediatric subspecialists and surgeons to provide integrated care for children with anomalies and diseases of the gastrointestinal system.

Genetics specializes in the diagnosis and management of congenital and genetic disorders. We provide care for newborn, infants, children and adolescents with birth defects, chromosomal disorder, neurodevelopmental disorders, autism, auditory and visual disorders, seizures, metabolic problems, and other hereditary conditions.

We work in close collaboration with other pediatric subspecialists to provide integrated care for children with congenital and genetic disorders. We provide consultations, genetic counseling, family education and support.

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology specializes in caring for children who have blood diseases and cancer.  We provide diagnosis, treatment and management of blood related disorders and cancer including iron deficiency anemia, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, leukemia and lymphoma in infants, children, and teens.

We are members of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and have open national protocols for pediatric malignancies. We also provide hematology services including comprehensive sickle cell disease management.

Pediatric Infectious Diseases provides consultations, diagnosis and management of infants and children with a broad array of bacterial parasitic and viral infections. We work in close collaboration with other pediatric subspecialists to provide care for children with infectious and immunological problems.  We provide consultations and assistance with selection of appropriate antibiotics, antivirals, or other forms of therapy for infants and children.

Neonatology specializes in the care of critically ill and premature newborns.  We have a Multidisciplinary Pediatric High-Risk Clinic to provide primary and neuro developmental follow up care for infants discharged from the NICU and other referring hospitals.  We offer an array of pediatric specialty service referrals based on the need of the child.

Pediatric Nephrology specializes in the diagnosis and management of children with a variety of acute and chronic kidney-related disorders and urinary tract infections. We care for children with kidney diseases including chronic kidney disease, hypertension, UTI, and nephrolithiasis.  We have 24-hour nephrology coverage for our pediatric trauma patients.

Our Pediatric Neurology subspecialty provides multidisciplinary care for children and adolescents with diseases of the nervous system.  We address the special needs of children with neurological disorders and work together with patients and their families to provide best and most effective treatments and technologies. Child neurology inpatient consultations and outpatient services are available to evaluate children with a wide range of acute neurological problems including seizures, epilepsy, neurogenetic disorders, and other neurological complications.

Pulmonary, Allergy and Sleep specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of allergies, immunologic, and pulmonary diseases.  We provide consultation and care for newborn, infants, children and adolescents with allergies, chronic lung, and respiratory problems, tonsilitis, obstructive sleep apneas, sleep disorders, and immunodeficiency problems. We work in close collaboration with other pediatric subspecialists to provide integrated care for children with allergies and pulmonary disorders.

Our pediatric units: General Pediatric Inpatient, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provide care for children of all ages.  We are staffed by a highly skilled team of board-certified physicians and pediatric subspecialists to care for your child.
