On Friday, June 4, Cook County hosted a ribbon cutting at the Blue Island Health Center at 12757 South Western Avenue. The health center opened its doors to patients on June 8, 2020. Due to pandemic restrictions around people gathering, the grand opening celebration was delayed.

“Throughout this challenging year, the staff at the Blue Island Health Center remained committed to providing safe care to patients. We are pleased to finally be able to come together safely to recognize the dedication of those who were critical to the opening and operation of this facility,” said Toni Preckwinkle, President, Cook County Board of Commissioners.

This health center is one part of Cook County Health’s broader health equity strategy to provide high-quality, patient-centered care in the neighborhoods where its patients live and work.

The health center has had more than 3,000 visits each month and offers a wide range of services such as audiology, behavioral health, pediatrics, ophthalmology, oral health, psychiatry and physical therapy.

“The Blue Island Health Center fills a critical need for high-quality, accessible health care in the southland,” said Israel Rocha, CEO, Cook County Health. “We are proud to serve the Blue Island area and look forward to being an integral part of this community for years to come.”

Over the past year, the Blue Island Health Center has served approximately 6,000 primary care patients, 16,000 specialty care patients and 3,000 radiology patients. More than 13,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered to both patients and community members at the health center.

Each month, the health center hosts a Fresh Truck from the Greater Chicago Food Depository. On average, the truck serves 90 patients and their families with each distribution, helping them access the nutritious food that is vital to their health and wellbeing.

The center’s patient demographics are reflective of the diverse and dynamic communities in the greater Blue Island area. The health center serves patients of all backgrounds, including those who speak Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin.
