Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center Celebrates

14 years of remarkable success in HIV/AIDS prevention, care & research  

CHICAGO-The Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center announced today a 14-year milestone for the clinic that focuses on the prevention, care, and research of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. The Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center was established as a partnership between the Cook County Health and Hospitals System and Rush University Medical Center. Since it opened its doors in 1998, the Center has remained one of the largest HIV/AIDS clinics in the United States and treats more than 6,000 patients annually.

“The CORE Center is one of the Health System’s gems.  It is a health care clinic with dedicated staff and filled with patients who receive top quality care because of the ongoing research, prevention and dedication put into this unit,” said Dr. Ram Raju, CEO, Cook County Health and Hospitals System.

“The CORE Center opened in 1998 to help patients who were dying of AIDS.  Now, 14 years later, we remain the largest center for treating patients with HIV and celebrate our rededication and our renovating of clinic space,” said Dr. Robert Weinstein, Chief Operating Officer, Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Cook County Health and Hospitals System.

“Since it first opened fourteen years ago, the CORE Center has been a leader in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS not just in Chicago, but across the nation,” said U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL).  “Congratulations to the CORE Center on its newly renovated facility and its important work improving life for those living with HIV.”

“I would like to recognize Ruth Rothstein’s continuing leadership and devotion (or commitment) to the remarkable success of the CORE Center as it celebrates 14 years and rededicates itself to serve and care for the thousands living with HIV.  We need to follow Ruth’s example and support the CORE Center’s vision for the future,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.

The CORE Center highlights the renovations that have been made to meet the challenges of the next decade — prevention new HIV cases, identification of existing HIV positive individuals and provision of services for a population that is living longer and encountering health issues for the aging.

• Unveiling of the renovated areas of the Center – new dental suite,  lobby, laboratory

• Recognition of donors past and present who made the Center a reality and continue to make the provision of top rate services possible

• Honoring the dedication and commitment of Ruth M. Rothstein who spearheaded the original campaign to build the Center and continues her support by serving on the Foundation Board.

The mission of the CORE Center is to provide the highest quality care for persons and families affected by infectious diseases, with respect, dignity and compassion, without regard to the ability to pay; to ensure a patient-centered and consumer-guided environment; and to seek to better understand and to prevent these diseases through education and research.
