Dr. John Jay Shannon, CEO of Cook County Health (CCH), was named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s 100 great leaders in healthcare list.

To be chosen for Becker’s list, individuals had to demonstrate they are ‘taking the lead in transforming healthcare in the U.S’ and working to improve the quality of care and solve the toughest problems in healthcare today. Of the 100 health system leaders selected nationwide, Dr. Shannon was one of only 5 from Illinois named to Becker’s list.

CCH has efficiently organized its resources, strategically positioned its leadership team and ultimately delivered patient care under Dr. Shannon’s leadership, Becker’s noted.  While working to ensure CCH efficiently uses taxpayer dollars, Dr. Shannon has also aligned the system’s role as a care provider in traditional and correctional settings, as a public health authority and as a health plan. In recent years, through CCH has reduced its reliance on local taxpayers by 75%.  Today, the health system receives just $102 million or less than 5% of its revenues from local taxpayers to fund the operations of the system.

One of the largest public health systems in the nation, CCH serves as the safety net for health care in Chicago and suburban Cook County. CCH is comprised of two acute care hospitals, a robust network of more than a dozen community health centers, the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center, the Cook County Department of Public Health, Cermak Health Services, which provides health care to individuals at the Cook County Jail and the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, and CountyCare, a Medicaid managed care health plan. The system cares for more than 300,000 unique patients each year.

Since being appointed CEO in 2014, Dr. Shannon has been named to Becker’s list of 100 Physician Leaders and its list of Non-profit Hospital and Health System CEOs to Know four years in a row, as well as to Crain’s Chicago Business Who’s Who from 2014 to 2017.
