Dr. Mathew also named Governor-Elect of the American College of Physicians Illinois Chapter, Northern Region.
Suja M. Mathew, MD, FACP, has been named Chair of Medicine for the Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCH). A resident of Hinsdale, Dr. Mathew has served CCH for fifteen years, holding numerous leadership positions including most recently the Interim Chair of Medicine role.
“I am honored to lead the Department of Medicine at this important time in history, developing systems to keep our patients healthy and caring for them with the highest levels of quality, commitment, and compassion,” said Dr. Mathew.
As Chair of Medicine, Dr. Mathew will lead CCH forward in ensuring that the system continues to provide exceptional care to its patients, including members of CountyCare. Her responsibilities will include strengthening quality and safety efforts, unifying internal medicine providers across the system and expanding the pipeline of the next generation of physicians, especially those specializing in primary care.
Dr. Mathew served as the program director of the John H. Stroger Jr., Hospital internal medical residency program, one of the largest internal medicine programs in the nation. She has dedicated much of her career to enhancing graduate medical education, serving as a teacher and advisor to countless young physicians with a specific focus on empowering female physicians to take leadership roles.
“Dr. Mathew’s leadership is invaluable to both our staff and students,” said Dr. Claudia Fegan, Executive Medical Director, CCH. “She is not only an exceptionally accomplished physician but also a committed, thoughtful mentor. Many of her students have gone on to become highly-skilled specialists and subject matter experts.”
Earlier this year, Dr. Mathew was elected by the members of the American College of Physicians (ACP) Illinois Chapter, Northern Region to serve as the organization’s Governor-Elect. She will begin her four-year term as Governor in May 2016. In this role, Dr. Mathew will supervise chapter activities, appoint members to local committees and preside over regional meetings. She will also represent the chapter on the ACP Board of Governors.
Dr. Mathew earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
