About Naloxone
Naloxone is a safe, life‑saving medication that reverses opioid overdoses by restoring breathing.
When administered promptly, Naloxone can save a life by removing opioids from the receptors in the brain that control breathing and allow the person to start breathing again.
Naloxone typically begins working within 3 to 5 minutes. If there is no response after the first dose, a second dose may be needed after 3 minutes.
Because naloxone wears off after 30 to 90 minutes, it is possible for the person to overdose again. Therefore, it is critical to call 911 even if the person becomes responsive.
How to Use Naloxone
Lay. Spray. Stay.
Follow these three simple steps to save a life with naloxone. Remember: Lay. Spray. Stay.
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
How do I know if someone is overdosing?
Call 911 immediately if someone shows any of the following signs of an overdose:
- Bluish purple, grayish, ashen, pale, or clammy skin
- Limp body
- Utrata przytomności
- Blue or purple lips or fingernails
- Vomiting, gurgling noises, choking, or death rattle
- Unresponsive or unable to speak
- Slow or stopped breathing
Prompt action can save a life.
Someone who is overdosing on fentanyl may also have any of those symptoms plus “wooden chest syndrome,” where the person’s chest muscles become rigid which can cause them to sit straight upright instead of slumped over like during a typical overdose. Naloxone will reverse wooden chest syndrome once it starts to take effect, which then allows for CPR to be performed safely.
