[{"id":20958,"date":"2026-04-02T11:12:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T16:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cookcountyhealth.org\/?post_type=press-release&#038;p=20958"},"modified":"2026-04-02T11:51:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T16:51:33","slug":"stroger-hospital-awarded-10000-grant-from-the-toy-foundation-to-support-pediatric-patients","status":"publish","type":"press-release","link":"https:\/\/cookcountyhealth.org\/zh\/press-release\/stroger-hospital-awarded-10000-grant-from-the-toy-foundation-to-support-pediatric-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"Stroger Hospital Awarded $10,000 Grant from The Toy Foundation to Support Pediatric Patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cook County Health\u2019s Stroger Hospital has been awarded a $10,000 grant from The&nbsp;Toy Foundation\u2019s Children\u2019s Hospital Play Grants Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0Toy Foundation\u00a0awarded 37 projects at hospitals across the nation, recognizing programs that highlighted the importance of play in pediatric care, particularly those in underserved communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, Stroger Hospital cared for more than 9,200 children across in its emergency department, pediatric ICU and inpatient and observation units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStroger Hospital has long served some of the area\u2019s most vulnerable children,\u201d said Donnica Austin-Cathey, Chief Hospital Executive, Stroger Hospital. \u201cWe are grateful to The\u00a0Toy Foundation for\u00a0supporting our mission and helping bring joy to our young patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ruthie Charendoff, Certified Child Life Specialist for Stroger\u2019s pediatric emergency and trauma departments, said the grant will be used to fund toys and therapeutic books for patients through the hospital\u2019s PlayForward initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PlayForward&nbsp;supports child development by promoting emotional well-being, strengthening coping strategies, and encouraging positive growth in and out of the hospital.&nbsp;The program helps children meet developmental milestones through play while equipping families with the tools to continue that support at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through PlayForward, the Child Life team provides education about medical procedures, teaches relaxation techniques, and creates personalized coping kits. Age-appropriate toys and toolkits are used in one-on-one sessions to help children prepare for procedures, process new diagnoses, and reenact medical experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to the&nbsp;Toy Foundation&nbsp;for their support,\u201d said Dr. Mopelola Akintorin, Chair of Pediatrics at Cook County Health. \u201cWhile medical teams focus on treating illnesses, resources like these can improve a child\u2019s emotional well-being and support recovery. Research continues to show the important role that play has in healing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing in the hospital can be scary and frustrating for children,\u201d Ms. Charendoff said.&nbsp; \u201cThrough PlayForward, we aim to not only support children\u2019s developmental milestones during their hospital stay but also to give families the tools and knowledge to continue that process at home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;Toy Foundation\u2019s Play Fund program is the only industry-wide funding initiative that brings the power of play to hospitals. Uniting the philanthropy of&nbsp;toy&nbsp;companies enables The&nbsp;Toy Foundation&nbsp;to fund a variety of projects, from sensory-friendly play areas to themed arts and crafts activities, and innovative play equipment that is inclusive for patients of all abilities. As a result, children are more likely to feel a sense of normalcy in an unfamiliar environment, develop positive behaviors and attitudes, and build stronger coping skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Toy Foundation\u2019s mission is to bring the power of play to children who need it most. By growing the Play Fund, we\u2019re delivering more than play; we\u2019re delivering comfort, joy, and hope to children throughout their medical journeys,\u201d said Pam Mastrota, executive director of TTF. \u201cWe are deeply grateful for every donation that allows us to fund more play projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cook County Health continues to expand efforts to support its youngest patients. Across the country, patients face long wait times for appointments, provider shortages and increasing barriers to care \u2013 challenges likely to worsen due to federal budget cuts to the health care safety net,\u201d said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. \u201cTo meet this moment, we must do more than just maintain our health care workforce, we must expand and strengthen it, particularly in communities where the need is greatest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Provident Scholarship Fund offers $20,000 scholarships to health professional students, including those in medical, dental, physician assistant and nurse practitioner programs and $10,000 scholarships to undergraduate and allied health students, including those nursing, behavioral health, surgical and radiology technology, respiratory therapy, and paramedic programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scholarship will also support awardees with mentorship and professional development opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy reducing financial barriers for aspiring healthcare professionals, we aren&#8217;t just awarding scholarships, we are investing in the next generation of caregivers who will serve our communities. The Pritzker Traubert Foundation focuses on expanding economic opportunity in Chicago by investing in innovations to help residents adapt, adjust and thrive in a changing labor market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inaugural Chicago Talent Challenge centers on health care in recognition of the industry\u2019s unique capacity to produce the creative and scalable solutions that our national workforce challenges demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HealthCatalyst Chicago is expected to train and place Chicagoans into 1,000 health care jobs over the next three years and up to 400 positions annually thereafter. As federal cuts threaten to leave thousands of\u00a0County\u00a0residents hungry,\u00a0Cook County Health (CCH) also unveiled new &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/cookcountyhealth.org\/zh\/fam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food as Medicine<\/a>&#8221; initiatives designed to integrate nutrition directly into patient care.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagosfoodbank.org\/get-help\/benefits-outreach\/snap-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Effective February 1, 2026<\/strong><\/a>, federal mandate&nbsp;now&nbsp;requires&nbsp;individuals aged 18 to 64 without dependents under 14 to work or volunteer at least&nbsp;80 hours&nbsp;per month to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;SNAP eligibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo one should lose access to food because the rules are confusing or because they don\u2019t know where to turn,\u201d&nbsp;said Dulce M. Quintero, Secretary of the Illinois Department of Human Services. \u201cThat\u2019s why Illinois is preparing and acting \u2013 by sharing clear information, offering tools to help people understand their options, and working with trusted community partners to reach those who may be impacted.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe federal cuts&nbsp;to&nbsp;SNAP&nbsp;eligibility are a step backward that ignores&nbsp;the realities of today\u2019s economy,\u201d&nbsp;said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. \u201cAs the&nbsp;cost of living has surged while job&nbsp;growth stalls, families&nbsp;are being squeezed&nbsp;even harder.&nbsp;When the federal government&nbsp;retreats from&nbsp;its responsibility, counties like ours&nbsp;step up, because&nbsp;access to nutritious food is a public good and a&nbsp;shared&nbsp;responsibility.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, effective April 1, many immigrants under official humanitarian protections will lose SNAP eligibility entirely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFood is medicine\u2014it nourishes our bodies, supports mental health, and helps prevent and manage chronic illnesses,\u201d said Kate Maehr, Executive Director and CEO of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. \u201cWhen people lose access to nutritious food, their health suffers. With the upcoming SNAP changes, food insecurity will&nbsp;soar:&nbsp;lines at our food pantries will get longer, parents will skip meals for their children, and seniors will forgo medication to afford groceries. The opening of Cook County Health\u2019s two new food pantries is an essential step in ensuring vital nutrition for patients, and I am deeply grateful for their partnership.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cook County Health leaders emphasized that food insecurity is not just a social issue, but a critical health crisis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a physician, I want to be very clear: hunger is a medical issue,\u201d said Dr. Erik Mikaitis, CEO of Cook County Health. \u201cFood insecurity is linked to higher rates of diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease.&nbsp;The federal cuts to SNAP are coming at the same&nbsp;time&nbsp;we are seeing more people at risk of losing their medical coverage, creating a perfect storm.&nbsp;Hunger should never be a diagnosis, and food should never be a treatment that people cannot&nbsp;afford.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to these&nbsp;upcoming&nbsp;challenges, Cook County Health is expanding its Food as Medicine program.&nbsp;Championed by the late&nbsp;Cook County&nbsp;Commissioner Dennis Deer, the&nbsp;initiative&nbsp;recognizes that preventing&nbsp;and managing&nbsp;illness starts with nutrition.&nbsp;The Greater Chicago Food Depository continues to serve as a critical partner in filling the gaps left by federal policy shifts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cook County Health&#8217;s new and expanded Food as Medicine&nbsp;initiatives include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>On-Site Food Pantries<\/strong>:\u00a0Foods\u00a0pantries\u00a0have been opened\u00a0at It reflects an elite level of readiness, quality, and patient outcomes that few institutions attain,\u201d said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. \u201cACS verification underscores that Stroger Hospital\u2019s trauma team sets the standard for excellence, compassion, and innovation in saving lives and strengthening our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo one ever expects to need trauma care, but when they do, they want and deserve the best specialists and resources. &nbsp;ACS verification is more than a designation, it is confidence that the trauma care at Stroger Hospital meets the highest national standards. We are proud to be the only ACS verified trauma center serving Chicago,\u201d said CCH CEO, Dr. Erik Mikaitis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surveyors from ACS recently made a multi-day visit to Stroger Hospital to conduct a Trauma Verification, Review and Consultation Program (Trauma VRC Program). &nbsp;The peer-review survey team assessed the hospital\u2019s commitment, readiness, resources, policies, patient care, performance improvement, and other program features. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACS verification goes above and beyond standards required for trauma center designation at the state level. Patients cared for in ACS-verified trauma centers have a 25% lower risk of death and an improved quality of life compared with patients in non-verified centers due to access to on-call specialty surgical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis certification is a powerful testament to our team&#8217;s commitment to excellence,\u201d said Dr. Lauren Smith, CCH Chief Medical Officer. \u201cTo complete the rigorous verification process while at the same time also providing exceptional care to high acuity patients shows an incredible level of professionalism, resilience, and teamwork.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surveyors noted strong leadership from the trauma team; exemplary work in Trauma Recovery, Intervention, &amp; Prevention, which provides on-site violence intervention; and excellent professional and public education, including Stroger\u2019s military-civilian partnership with the U.S. Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three levels of ACS trauma center verification, each defined by specific standards that speak to the important roles of the center in serving its community. These standards clarify the care that must be available to the injured patient at the facility, along with other expectations related to research and educational contributions to advance the field and to ensure the availability of highly qualified trauma providers in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCook County Health has been the site of many medical firsts throughout its storied history, and one includes Cook County Trauma Unit, the oldest comprehensive unit in the country,\u201d said Dr. Mallory Williams, Cook County Health Chair of the Department of Trauma &amp; Burn Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cBecause of the exceptional patient-centered, high-quality care we provide, countless patients have survived injuries that could have otherwise been devastating. This is another&nbsp;important step&nbsp;in health equity for Cook County, ensuring that children&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;have to miss school or their afterschool activities because of lack of access to care.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the American Dental Association, 34 million school hours and 92 million work hours are lost each year due to unplanned dental visits for untreated oral health conditions.
