In April, National Minority Health Month is commemorated by raising awareness about health disparities that persist, affecting racial and ethnic minorities. Health Disparities are the differences in rates of disease, health outcomes and access to healthcare found between different groups of people.

2013’s theme, Advance Health Equity Now: Uniting Our Communities to Bring Health Care Coverage to All is a call to action, towards unity towards a common goal of improving the health of our communities and increasing access to quality, affordable health care for everyone.

However, it is important for people to recognize that improving your health starts with you. Before you medical visits, prepare for your visit, communicate confidently with your healthcare provider (asking questions and providing information), and be a full partner in your healthcare and to follow your treatment plan.
