During her 35-year career in hospital administration and public health, Debra Carey has worked in Washington, D.C., New York and Chicago. Ms. Carey is currently serving as the Interim CEO for Cook County Health.
Prior to January 2020, Ms. Carey served as Deputy CEO of Operations for Cook County Health responsible for all inpatient and outpatient operations for the health system. Prior to assuming the Deputy CEO position, Ms. Carey served as Chief Operating Officer of Ambulatory Services, managing the health system’s network of outpatient health centers that treat nearly one million patients each year.
While serving as the CEO of SUNY’s Downstate Medical Center, Ms. Carey took on an associate professorship, lecturing the School of Public Health on health management, leadership, finance and policy. She also served as the CEO of Howard University Hospital for six years. She received her bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition from Syracuse University and her Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
