Becker’s Hospital Review has named Cook County Health (CCH) CEO Dr. Jay Shannon to their annual list of Physician Leaders of Hospitals & Health Systems to Know for 2017.

This list highlights physician leaders who have demonstrated both outstanding leadership and clinical expertise throughout their careers. Becker’s notes that hospitals led by physicians are consistently ranked and rated as top hospitals. Dr. Shannon serves as CCH’s CEO and is also a practicing pulmonologist at CCH. .

Dr. Shannon has spent most of his medical career at CCH since joining the staff in 1990. He has held a variety of medical leadership positions within CCH, including serving as the director of the Adult Asthma Clinic, the Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine, and as Chief of the Divisions of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Stroger Hospital. Prior to being appointed CEO in 2014, Dr. Shannon was the Chief of Clinical Integration at CCH.

Under Dr. Shannon’s leadership, CCH has focused on enhancing care quality and the patient experience, expanded primary and preventive care services, and improved its financial position. Additionally, Dr. Shannon has overseen the growth of the CountyCare Medicaid health plan, and is a fierce advocate for the health care for all in Cook County, regardless of income, immigration status, or insurance.

This is Dr. Shannon’s fourth consecutive year as one of Becker’s Physician Leaders to Know. He has been on the list since taking the role of CEO at CCH. The Becker’s editorial staff compiles this list from nominations and independent research.
