The mission of the Cirugía de colon y recto Division is to provide comprehensive, compassionate and state-of-the-art care for patients suffering from diseases of the colon, rectum, anus, and small bowel and to further the advancements of research and education for these diseases.
La división de Cirugía de colon y recto was established by Herand Abcarian, MD at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital). Dr. Abcarian, who trained under the tutelage of Durand Smith, MD, was the first colon and rectal surgeon in the U.S. to hold an endowed academic chair in colon and rectal surgical practice. The Division consists of colon and rectal surgeons who are Board Certified by the American Board of Cirugía de colon y recto. We also have advanced practical nurses who assist the surgeons in the care of the patients.
The Division carries out all types of colon and rectal operations including transanal Cirugía mínimamente invasiva (TAMIS) y transanal total mesorectal escisiónTaTME). Surgeons within our division have extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery of the colon, rectum, anus and small bowel for malignant disease as well as benign conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), complex anorectal surgery, and complex multivisceral operaciones
