We are anchoring healthy communities with providers who come from their communities and understand them,\u201d said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. \u201cI&#8217;m proud that this year&#8217;s Provident Scholarship Fund awards mark a cumulative $5 million commitment to our medical students and healthcare system that will make Cook County healthier and stronger.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Provident Scholarship Fund provides financial relief across two distinct tiers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>$20,000 Scholarships:<\/strong> Awarded to advanced health professional students, including those enrolled in doctorate-level medical and dental tracks, as well as physician assistant, behavioral health, and nurse practitioner programs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$10,000 Scholarships:<\/strong> Awarded to undergraduate and allied health students pursuing critical roles in nursing, surgical and radiology technology, respiratory therapy, and paramedic programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Association of American Medical Colleges projects a shortage of upwards of 86,000 physicians by 2036. While the American Hospital Association projects a shortage of more than 100,000 healthcare workers nationally by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHospitals across the nation are grappling with severe, chronic staffing shortages,\u201d said Dr. Erik Mikaitis, CEO of Cook County Health. \u201cWe all see the statistics, and the projected gaps of tens of thousands of nurses, medical assistants, behavioral health specialists, and physicians. But as healthcare leaders and concerned citizens, we cannot simply look at data projections and wait for the problem to resolve itself. We have to build our own pipeline. The first Navy corpsman trauma training program began at Stroger Hospital in 2014. In the years since, Navy officers and enlisted medical professionals have continued to do rotations through the hospital\u2019s trauma unit<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis partnership has empowered our military trauma teams \u2013 specifically our seven-person expeditionary resuscitative surgical systems \u2013 with world-class training that has, almost certainly, saved lives,\u201d said Rear Adm. Rick Freedman, acting U.S. Navy surgeon general and chief, U.S. Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. \u201cThis success is a direct testament to the vision and hard work of everyone involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2022, this critical military-civilian partnership with CCH and its hospital systems has provided U.S. Navy medical teams an opportunity to operate at the leading edge of medicine with high trauma case volume, acuity, and&nbsp;complexity.&nbsp; The trauma unit at Stroger Hospital has more than 4,000 activations annually. Approximately 25 percent of those cases include penetrating trauma, most commonly gun or knife injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are proud to reaffirm our partnership with the U.S. Navy. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, honoring six decades of pioneering lifesaving care and service to the people of Cook County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 1966 by Drs. Robert Baker and Robert Freeark, the trauma unit was established at Cook County Hospital to provide urgent, specialized care to acutely injured patients. The unit treated 1,000 patients in its first year. Today, the unit cares for an average of 4,000 patients annually, treating complex injuries from car accidents, falls, and penetrating injuries such as gunshots and stabbings, along with burn injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor 60 years, the trauma team at Cook County Health and John H. Stroger Hospital has represented the very best of public service with an unwavering commitment to care for every person who needs it,\u201d Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said. \u201cThis department helped transform trauma medicine in Chicago and across the nation, proving that world-class care and human dignity must go hand in hand. Generations of physicians, nurses, first responders and support staff have saved countless lives and Cook County is stronger because of their extraordinary work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a national leader in trauma care, the unit integrates surgical excellence, critical care, rehabilitation and social services. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that patients receive comprehensive support necessary not just to survive, but thrive, after a devastating injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCook County Health has long worked to ensure that every patient has access to the care they need,\u201d Cook County Health CEO Dr. Erik Mikaitis said. \u201cBut we have also long believed that it\u2019s not enough to simply treat the injury, we must also treat the person. Our trauma team\u2019s legacy is built on the idea that world-class care should be available to everyone, regardless of their circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To commemorate the milestone anniversary, Cook County leaders, Stroger Hospital officials and trauma department staff, and former patients came together on April 23 to celebrate and reflect on the department\u2019s impact \u2013 from the lives saved to medical advancements to the professionals who have trained in the unit and taken their skills across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are here today because decades ago, Drs. Baker and Freeark knew that we could deliver care in a better way,\u201d Stroger Chair of Trauma and Burn Services Dr. Mallory Williams said. \u201cTheir legacy ensures that lives that might not have been able to have been saved in a previous era can be saved today. We carry their work forward every day because Cook County residents deserve to know we are here for them in their most vulnerable moments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stroger Hospital became the only hospital in Chicago and only second in Illinois to earn <a href=\"https:\/\/cookcountyhealth.org\/ar\/%d8%a8%d9%8a%d8%a7%d9%86-%d8%b5%d8%ad%d9%81%d9%8a\/stroger-hospital-becomes-first-trauma-center-in-chicagoto-be-verified-by-american-college-of-surgeons\/\">Level I trauma center verification from the American College of Surgeons<\/a> in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Stroger Hospital Trauma &amp; Burn Department also serves as an essential training partner for the U.S. Navy, providing collaborative learning experiences for the Navy\u2019s medical personnel. This partnership started in 2013 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cookcountyhealth.org\/ar\/%d8%a8%d9%8a%d8%a7%d9%86-%d8%b5%d8%ad%d9%81%d9%8a\/%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%a8%d8%ad%d8%b1%d9%8a%d8%a9-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%a3%d9%85%d8%b1%d9%8a%d9%83%d9%8a%d8%a9-%d9%88%d9%88%d8%b2%d8%a7%d8%b1%d8%a9-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%b5%d8%ad%d8%a9-%d9%81%d9%8a-%d9%85%d9%82%d8%a7\/\">scope expanded in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hospital leaders also noted the impact the trauma unit has on the broader medical services available at Stroger Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you build one of the strongest trauma programs in the country, you don\u2019t just improve trauma care at a hospital, you elevate all of the other services that support it,\u201d said Donnica Austin-Cathey, Chief Hospital Executive, Stroger Hospital. \u201cA trauma patient\u2019s care may include experts in anesthesiology, neurology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, rehabilitation and more. An estimated 400,000 Illinoisans could lose coverage due to funding and eligibility changes contained in H.R. 1, <a href=\"https:\/\/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rwjf.org%2Fen%2Finsights%2Four-research%2F2026%2F03%2Fmillions-could-lose-health-coverage-due-to-new-rules.html&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ckate.hedlin%40cookcountyhhs.org%7Cf8ef23233c144ce43a6808de96f27d6c%7C3b922295e886417faaa84e4c4f069d82%7C0%7C0%7C639114165394304525%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=2Nrpg78sISvMGct8fVzRXzm1WwFqy0YCLMqwQBgbyus%3D&amp;reserved=0\">according to Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe healthcare provisions of H.R. 1 will bring widespread and complex shifts to the Medicaid program in the years to come, including more requirements customers must meet to be eligible for coverage and major financing changes that will put significant pressure on the state budget,\u201d Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services Director Elizabeth M. Whitehorn said. \u201cMitigating the anticipated harm these federal changes will cause by helping customers navigate the new requirements to keep their coverage and working to ensure the Illinois Medicaid program can continue to cover as many critical healthcare services as possible are HFS\u2019 top priorities. We are grateful to Cook County Health and to all of our partners who share these goals and commitment to Medicaid customers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal guidance on exemptions and verification processes for work requirements is expected in June 2026. States are required to share details about these requirements with impacted Medicaid enrollees by the end of September 2026, with the changes taking effect in January 2027. Instead, they create unnecessary red tape that makes it harder for eligible individuals to enroll and stay covered, which will ultimately leave hundreds of thousands uninsured. I am proud that Cook County is collaborating with the State of Illinois to protect health coverage for as many residents as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2025, Cook County Health convened the first meeting of the Medicaid Impact Workgroup, comprised of representatives from state and local agencies, health care and social service providers, insurers, businesses, academia and community organizations. The workgroup\u2019s singular goal is to help eligible individuals in Cook County keep their Medicaid coverage despite federal cuts and policy changes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCook County Health created the Medicaid Impact Workgroup because we recognize that the scale and complexity of these federal changes demand a coordinated response,\u201d said Dr. Erik Mikaitis, Chief Executive Officer, Cook County Health. \u201cNo single organization can meet this moment alone. Age-appropriate toys and toolkits are used in one-on-one sessions to help children prepare for procedures, process new diagnoses, and reenact medical experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are grateful to the&nbsp;Toy Foundation&nbsp;for their support,\u201d said Dr. Mopelola Akintorin, Chair of Pediatrics at Cook County Health. \u201cWhile medical teams focus on treating illnesses, resources like these can improve a child\u2019s emotional well-being and support recovery. Research continues to show the important role that play has in healing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing in the hospital can be scary and frustrating for children,\u201d Ms. Charendoff said.&nbsp; \u201cThrough PlayForward, we aim to not only support children\u2019s developmental milestones during their hospital stay but also to give families the tools and knowledge to continue that process at home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;Toy Foundation\u2019s Play Fund program is the only industry-wide funding initiative that brings the power of play to hospitals. Uniting the philanthropy of&nbsp;toy&nbsp;companies enables The&nbsp;Toy Foundation&nbsp;to fund a variety of projects, from sensory-friendly play areas to themed arts and crafts activities, and innovative play equipment that is inclusive for patients of all abilities. As a result, children are more likely to feel a sense of normalcy in an unfamiliar environment, develop positive behaviors and attitudes, and build stronger coping skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Toy Foundation\u2019s mission is to bring the power of play to children who need it most. By growing the Play Fund, we\u2019re delivering more than play; we\u2019re delivering comfort, joy, and hope to children throughout their medical journeys,\u201d said Pam Mastrota, executive director of TTF. \u201cWe are deeply grateful for every donation that allows us to fund more play projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cook County Health continues to expand efforts to support its youngest patients. Across the country, patients face long wait times for appointments, provider shortages and increasing barriers to care \u2013 challenges likely to worsen due to federal budget cuts to the health care safety net,\u201d said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. \u201cTo meet this moment, we must do more than just maintain our health care workforce, we must expand and strengthen it, particularly in communities where the need is greatest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Provident Scholarship Fund offers $20,000 scholarships to health professional students, including those in medical, dental, physician assistant and nurse practitioner programs and $10,000 scholarships to undergraduate and allied health students, including those nursing, behavioral health, surgical and radiology technology, respiratory therapy, and paramedic programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scholarship will also support awardees with mentorship and professional development opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy reducing financial barriers for aspiring healthcare professionals, we aren&#8217;t just awarding scholarships, we are investing in the next generation of caregivers who will serve our communities.
